Emily Katz
Director of Communications

As communications director, Emily is here is to tell the story of the Learning Center. A devoted storyteller, Emily believes every one of us has a story waiting to be told. Stories are how we make sense of the world around us and our place in it.
Before the Learning Center, Emily worked in philanthropy, as vice president of public policy at Northern California Grantmakers and as communications director at the Women’s Funding Network. Emily’s work in public policy reinforces her attention to the significance of language in shaping public thought about public health. In between, Emily co-wrote a story-filled cookbook memoir, Arabiyya, published to much acclaim by Penguin Random House. She has consulted on strategic communications, board development, fundraising, and, of course, storytelling, at numerous Bay Area health-related nonprofit organizations from San Jose to West Oakland.
Emily is the mother of college-age twins who are out adventuring in the world. She loves soaking in the quietude of the Humboldt redwoods, where she grew up. An avid home cook, Emily enjoys hosting and sharing stories around the dinner table.
